Sports are an emotional investment, being a sports fan can take a toll on the mind and soul. But there are those moments we will never forget and will stay with us our whole lives. Here are my top sports moments of the 2010’s. Keep in mind, I am a very biased sports fan!
India Wins The Cricket World Cup 2011
Bet you didn’t see this coming? Being Indian origin this is the team I will support above all. The last time India won the World Cup was 1983, the year I was born. This was a cup that needed to win, the past few World Cups India was underachieving. In 2003 they lost in the finals, in 2007 they didn’t make it past the Round Robin, so this time they had to do it! It was also memorable since the greatest batsman of all time Sachin Tendulkar finally got the World Cup that was missing from his illustrious career.
Toronto Raptors NBA Champions 2019
Trust me, had it not been for India’s World Cup, this would be my number 1 sports moment of the decade. We’ve suffered through brutal seasons, we’ve seen franchise player, after franchise player leave. We had a season with 16 win season! By all accounts we’ve had a very underachieving franchise! But in the 2014 it all changed, while we still never made all the way we had some great years and realistically we never thought we were going to win it all. But it all changed with the trade and as they say, the rest his history! #WeTheChamps!
Canada Olympic Gold 2010 Male and 2014 Female
I’m cheating a little here because I couldn’t decide which one was better, I had to choose the 2010 Gold Medal Men’s Game. The 2010 Gold Medal Game was epic and we knew we were going to win and how poetic was it that Crosby scores the OT winner.
But 2014 Women’s Gold Medal Game is still the greatest hockey game I ever saw in my life! Canada had such little chance of winning that game it was insane, down 0-2, an errant pass which almost went into the net, then Marie-Philip Poulin scoring the game tying goal with mere seconds left, then scoring the OT game winner! I still get chills watching the replays on YouTube.
Chicago Cubs World Series Champions 2016
World War 1, World War 2, Cold War, Gulf War, NBA, NFL, NHL, Women Can Vote, Sliced Bread, Zippers…what do all these things have in common? They didn’t exist the last time the Cubs won the World Series! The NBA didn’t exist the last time the Cubs were in the World Series, let that sink in! It was the greatest World Series I’ve ever seen and one of the best Game 7’s I’ve ever seen. Of course it would go into extra innings with a rain delay just to add to the drama! We got to see the Cubs win the World Series, you can’t even count how many people were born and died during that time period.
New England Super Bowl 51
We all hate the Patriots, but this game was beyond unbelievable. How do you come back from 28-3 let alone win it? I was at the bar with a bunch of friends watching this game, I got so bored after halftime I went home figuring it was going to be a snooze fest. Little did we know what was unfolding. This was the game that solidified Tom Brady as the G.O.A.T, this was the game that left everyone speechless, this is a game that will go down as one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time.
TFC 2017 MLS Cup Champions
After losing the big game at home, TFC had a lot of work cut out for them. Making at the time the greatest regular season in MLS history, they had a tough battle ahead of them in the Playoffs beating Columbus by a goal. They had to win it all otherwise the season was nothing. But they did and it was the first major championship for Canada in 24 years!
St Louis Blues 2019 Stanley Cup Champions
One of the greatest Cinderella stories I’ve seen, especially in the NHL. This team was in last place in the League in January! In a playoff season that was completely bizzare, they managed to basically scare everyone in their way. And to make thing sweeter, win game 7, in Boston! Who doesn’t love seeing the Bruins lose?
Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 NBA Champions
I’m sorry but when it comes to comparing Jordan and Lebron, I’m on team Lebron. Cleveland had had it worse when it comes to Championships than Toronto has, I’ll be the first to admit it. They lost the original Browns to Baltimore who won the Super Bowl 4 years later, the Indians are now the new Chicago Cubs with their 71 year drought which doesn’t seem to have an end in sight. Let’s not forget Lebron leaving them for Miami! Defeating arguably the greatest team in NBA history and taking it all the way to an epic Game 7. Lebron did what he was set out to do, bring Cleveland a championship which no one was able to do.
Japan Female 2011 FIFA Wold Cup Champions
The say the US Women’s Soccer Team has been dominant is a bit of an understatement. Japan had been down and going into extended time was nearly defeated with a game tying goal made with 3 minutes left. They managed to win the game in a shoot-out against Hope Solo! This game was better than the entire 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Usain Bolt Dominance
We will never see another more dominant runner in our lives. This guy literally completed a triple double for Olympic Gold Medals! Fastest man on earth? More like fastest man in History!
